I don't know how to describe my understanding of the German concept, heimat. It's home, but it's much deeper than that. I think the American concept of home is portable, but the German idea is not. You are your region, your small town, etc. It seems that it's rarely "you are your large city" when heimat is referenced. It's rural. This all came about because of Broder's article, "Heimat? No Thanks!" Basically we were supposed to be discussing the German Jewish heimat, and it just didn't come about because a lot of class was spent defining it.

The professor brought up an interesting point: Do white American people have heimat? It was really white people, but we were discussing it in the American context, so I had to let you know that. This is kind of a loaded question. I know what I think, but what do you think?
