Nov. 28th, 2010 09:02 pm I love my parents very much. I have an awesome mother and an awesome father. They busted their asses for me. My mom stayed at home because my father's income afforded her the luxury to do so. She always put us before herself.
My father is awesome in ways I can't even describe.
I am incredibly lucky.

Aug. 5th, 2010 05:52 pmBoring paper about Cranach: done.
All missing homework: completed and turned in.
Studying: not really
Dexter: Starting season 3. AH WTF at this show so far.
My grade should be pretty decent. Probably another B? B- at worst? I feel like I performed a little better this semester, but I had an unexcused absence which dropped my participation grade down to a B+, plus I did poorly on the quizzes (10% of the grade), but better on the exams (30%). Whatevs.
I have to clean my room before room check out, not to mention the usual laundry. I am sorely tempted to just put all of this off until Saturday so I have something to do before taking off for the German countryside. I cannot believe I will be on vacation in the country for two weeks - it just seems way too idyllic. Who the heck still does this? :P Assuming it will be something like a vacation for me as well, I have some reading on hand. Effi Briest, Die Verwandlung, and Jakob der Luegner. I am looking forward to finding a quiet place in the shade to read. Also looking forward to riding bikes. YAY!
Catharina wrote a prescription for Yasmin for me. It's a 6 month prescription and if I am reading her letter correctly it will be between 30-40 euro for six months. At first I thought it was for one month 30-40 euro but I don't think so, since birth control is super cheap here. I'm not 100% sure. I guess I'll find out when I try to get the prescription filled, probably
It just pisses me off that birth control is so cheap here but in the US they ream you every way possible. Even for generics. I think the US should buy a clue in regards to birth control cost.
I looked into the TESOL program at UNR. Their webpage greeted me with "Due to severe budget cuts at the university, it is proposed that the MA-TESOL program be de-activated for a period of five years. This proposal will be approved or disapproved by mid-May. You may wish to contact us again at that time for more information." They've been a little behind in updating but after searching The Sagebrush site, it seems it was deactivated for five years. I e-mailed them just in case. And surprise! In case this was something I *really* want to do, I can't even do it in state because UNLV doesn't offer it either. Way to go, NSHE. I'm of the opinion that "designer" programs should be offered at at least one in-state school, but that is apparently just too common sense for NSHE. My sister mentioned something about getting into out-of-state schools while paying NV tuition if the program is not offered, but I can't find anything and chances are it wouldn't apply anyway.
Suck.

Jul. 26th, 2010 08:03 pm Well my Sephora rollerball sucked - it leaked and then the bottom broke out. My atomizer is sturdier. . . but either way I believe I spilled a good amount of Armani Code for women on the floor when I went to investigate why it was leaking. /cry
Oh well. I haven't been wearing much perfume anyway. And now:
bed time.
I'm pretty far behind in class but then again I'm also pretty damn tired. Going to bed now and waking up at 6 will be good for me I think.
And my bike is making a shitty clicky noise. I'm going to the campus bike shop tomorrow if I have time. They fix bikes for free by showing you how. Language barrier should be really fun with this one!

Obst, Gemuse und Krauter Karls des Grossen
Awhile ago I mentioned on Facebook "Sekt ist ein Gift." Nate, who seems to think he knows everything pertaining to the German language because he spent a year living abroad in Leipzig* 2 years ago and is oh so cool asked me "Meinst du ein Geschenk?"
I said, "nein, ich meine ein Gift" because I literally meant poison because ich hatte einen Katzer.
Also: Embassy office in Bremen has weird hours. Must go to Berlin after all. Dang.
*Poor dude. Can't understand him most of the time because of it.

. . . having bitched about how difficult wool is to find in the U.S., well take that and multiply by 10 here in Germany. The group contact I have for the SCA said the internet is the best place, which means I wont be ordering any fabric until I open a Deutsche Bank account. I really just have visions of hanging out with the local group and smocking things until my little fingers bleed, but the websites she linked me to don't have white linen. Oy.
But the upside is that I will be learning textile terms very quickly. I think that's an upside.

OMG the gluttony!
I went to the market this morning and bought a bunch of carrots, two zucchini, an eggplant, whole grain tagliatelle, 2 garlic pickles, 1 Baumkuchen ecke, German salami, Italian Salami, a loaf of Ciabatta bread, Dolmades, and olives (and I don't even really like olives!)
Walking around so much anymore is not going to cut it if I keep eating like this. And trust me, I really really want to.
But really, the Baumkuchen was a treat and it was SOOOOOOOOO good and I definitely want more right now. I want more so hard.

Jun. 15th, 2010 04:19 pmBaerlauch is the most delicious thing I have put in my mouth in Germany. Well, maybe not THE MOST. It's up there with the Apfelkuchen from the people at the market, marzipan ice cream, and even the cheap chocolate from Pennymarkt.
I bought Baerlauch pesto from the guy at the market - it was expensive. 100g was about 5 euro, I could have gotten 400g of basil pesto for the same price, but I had to have the Baerlauch. It's potent and delicious!

Hiterjunge Quex and The Prioress' Tale
Jun. 7th, 2010 09:35 pm In German Cinema, we watched snippets of Hitlerjunge Quex. The one thing Heini's death scene brought to mind is the Prioress's Tale from The Canterbury Tales.
For those not familiar with either or, Hitlerjunge Quex ends with Heini, a member of the Hitler Youth, being killed by the communists. This is based on an actual death that happened during the street fights between members of the HY and the young communists. Anyway, Heini's last words are "Our flag flutters before us. . . " which is a part of a German Nationalist song.
This movie really reminded me of The Prioress's Tale in that there is faith without knowledge. Heini is drawn to the HY just as the boy in the Prioress's Tale is drawn to the Alma Redemptoris Mater and like the boy in the Prioress's Tale, Heini is murdered by enemies of the faith. . . which in the case of the Nazis were communists.
Anyway it's not a very fun thought, but one thing I don't think we ever touched on in Germany and Its Past was how the Nazi rise to power really reflected a religious fervor, and it is something I had not thought about before tonight. It's probably why the Nazis were so down on religion, because they wanted the faith of the people to lie in them and not God.
Anyway, no super happy fun time entry from me tonight. I got a D on my first advanced German exam and am kind of pissed with myself. My professor said she did not get it because I obviously do the homework and I got an A on my essay and a B+ on the quiz. At that point I tore into our textbook which provides crappy examples and is not very clear on some exercises. I also tore into her not giving us notice as to what would be on the exam until the night before, which was Wednesday. When I have cinema and am in class from 6 until 9. I told her that it was terribly inconvenient heh. Anyway, if I do well on the quiz tomorrow and the exam on Friday, I might get an A or B+ in the class. I was really hoping for the A. . . I don't think I will be wasting my time with advanced German next semester. I don't feel like I am learning anything except how to bullshit my way through the homework assignments. She doesn't even really review this stuff in class in an in-depth manner.
I'd be better off taking German conversation and teaching myself new vocabulary by reading Effi Briest (which I bought on Saturday. I enjoyed Anna Karenina and this is supposed to be similar)

Jun. 7th, 2010 05:16 pmI need to find a super simple apple cobbler recipe. Basically all I have here at home is milk, apples, butter, sugar, flour, baking soda, sugar, and cinnamon. I don't know where to find tapioca or condensed milk, which is what the recipes I am finding online are telling me to use.
Does anyone have a bomb apple cobbler recipe?
Thanks!
